Riroriro having lunch

On my way out along Koru Track in the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary yesterday I spotted a riroriro (a.k.a. grey warbler or grey gerygone) nearby. I had put my camera away by then as it was drizzling lightly, but took it out again as riroriro don't often invite me for a photo session. This species (alongside tītitipounamu / rifleman) is the smallest bird in New Zealand at about 6g. This bird made a few territorial songs, so I'm guessing it's a male.

Looking for bugs to snack on.

He found one! Decent sized spider.

Like a water bird with a fish, here he is throwing it towards the back of his throat for swallowing.

Almost gone...

He posed a few more times then headed off downhill and I headed out.
