Pīpīwharauroa being fed by riroriro foster parents

Following on from the below post. Pīpīwharauroa (shining cuckoo) being fed by riroriro (grey warbler) foster parents in the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary on Saturday.

I lost the birds for about 10 minutes. Then saw the riroriro pair who quickly led me to their foster child. Here's the first feeding visit I saw. The fledgling was perched on a lancewood leaf and received a feeding visit from a parent.

The fledgling kept moving, and I saw plenty more feeding visits but was not able to capture them all as I had to keep moving to find a window through the foliage. Feeding visits happen very rapidly, commonly less than a second from arrival to departure. The riroriro just posts the bug (commonly a caterpillar) in the gaping maw then leaves.

Another quick visit with a small green caterpillar.

The best - and longest - feeding visit was also the last one I was able to photograph, so it gets a blog post of its own (next post).
